Internet marketing strategy for more traffic - use psychology to attract visitors

get more visitors - attract customers - by selling kittens in jars

People are spending a lot of time and effort on building high-quality web sites with quality content - and of course there's nothing wrong with it.

But often it might be wise to develop a strategy beforehand - and also use some psychology before you even start to build your site. The phase when you are thinking about what niche market to chose, what subject your site should cover.

What market could be profitable, what kind of websites would get the most traffic ?

You just sit back, take a big breath, and (for a change) totally relieveyour mind from anything internet marketing related, no tech-talk, no high-quality blogs:

Turn on the TV or look into your daily newspaper and you will realize something very interesting:

  • The Nr.1 thing which will get people talking, attract attention, get media-coverage and traffic, traffic, traffic is: EMOTIONS

The funny and interesting thing with emotions is that they are not under conscious control. A site can disgust, can be outrageos, might even spawn endless discussion on the web if it's controversal...emotions will flow, opinions will be shared and people will talk about the subject endlessly.

The content (content-quality) itself might be less important. Why do you think do tabloids use headlines like blood, murder, racism, suppression, violence. Why do soaps on TV do so well ?

A good story also (and mainly) wants to stear-up human-emotions.

Go around on sites like http://www.digg.com or http://www.youtube.com and look what content gets the most hits ad what people talk most about.

You get the idea ?

One of (in my personal opinion) almost genius-like, very known old website some might remember was http://bonsaikitten.com - this was an old hoax site.

But there is no question that this site used all those psychological tricks to get people talking endlessly. I dont even want to know how much those MIT guys made with that site in ad revenue - and i dont even want to know about their traffic stats.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonsai_Kitten

shove them in...but dont hurt them...they're too cute

The site stirred up emotions in such a way that even the FBI was involved and animal rights group and people all over the world went crazy over the "controversial" content.

(The hoax-site wanted to make people believe that it is selling accessories for the hobby of growing cute live kittens in bottles and jars as a decorative accessory for your home. :) They went pretty far in their claims, ranging from how the kittens get muscle-relaxers shortly after they're born to fit in the bottles.....and how they are fed via feeding-tubes while they grow bigger inside the bottles)

What i want to point out is:

The next time you plan your website and think about how to get traffic and how to attract people and make them talk about your site all over the web - Think about the human psychology and what power emotions have.
